Routinely, there are 10-15 program scholarships awarded to Charlevoix area youth whose family situations may make it difficult to pay the fee for the summer program.  Local school officials identify these individuals and offer scholarships in exchange for their commitment to attend and become active participants in the Charlevoix County Junior Golf Program.

Ferris State University Golf Camp Scholarship

FSU offers a five week golf camp each summer.  The Charlevoix County Junior Golf Program selects 4-6 applicants to attend this prestigious golf experience.  In order to be eligible to apply, the junior must be 12 years or older, attend over half of the previous summer's junior golf sessions and complete the formal application (click here for more information)

Golf Skill Testing

After learning golf fundamentals, the program conducts skill testing for various age brackets.  As a result, girls and boys with the best scores in putting, pitching and chipping are awarded t-shirts or medals and other appropriate awards for their skills.

There are two tournaments conducted at the end of the summer session.  The Venetian Festival "Carey Cup" allows each age bracket to compete in medal play, usually held at the Belvedere and City Municipal course.  The final tournament is the program championship held at the Charlevoix Golf & Country Club.

Drive, Pitch and Putt Night

The program spotlights the city-owned municipal course with a special event.  The purpose is two-fold. It gives juniors a chance to display their golf progress with parents accompanying them on the course and it allows parents to appreciate the Municipal Course and its contribution to the juniors and the community.  Hopefully this event will allow juniors to qualify for the National program held at the Masters Tournament each year in the future.

Pizza Party/Picture Day

The final session held at the Charlevoix Country Club features the program tournament followed by a pizza party.  During the morning, the program photographer takes action pictures of the juiors that are framed and given to each participant free on the awards day.

Strive for a Prize

During almost every session, juniors can receive "prize tickets"for outstanding accomplishments - long putt, solid pitch, accurate chip as examples.  Participants collect these tickets and redeem them for prizes of their choice at the awards picnic.  Valuable prizes in the past have included golf clubs, bags, carts, UofM football tickets for two, season golf passes and local merchant gift certificates.

Deano and Steve's Kids

The program identifies 20-25 advance players ages 12 and up that display a passion for golf receive a free season pass for the City municipal course.  This program pays tribute to Steve Braun, long time teaching professional who was instrumental with Dean Davenport in establishing the program.  Both have provided tremendous leadership during the two decades this program has served the youth of Charlevoix.
